Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, generally, really not a new display. It is much the same as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.
Still, that could not be a trival new feature. After all, the press announcements say Thunderbolt will be the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps the product is worth a closer look.
Apple's new Thunderbolt display might not exactly offer a lot in terms of new display panel technology, but that does not mean it is behind the times or lacking in quality. Besides simply being big, it gives you everything that most users may want. LED backlighting allows for more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology allows for vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to incorporate some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.
Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" brand from this new service, it would still apply. This is a monitor which is geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos or even video games. The use of high-gloss glass as opposed to a matte surface is evidence of that. It ends in more glare, and also drastically increases contrast. Images appear to have real "pop" and do not suffer from grainy details if viewed closely.
There are monitors that, as outlined by technical measurements, provide more accurate colors. Few, however, can match the subjective brilliance of the display.
Monitors are certainly not required to give a lot of extra ports when they are cheap, but as the price rises beyond several hundred dollars, extra connections become expected. Apple includes a reputation for poor connectivity compared to similarly priced competitors, although the Thunderbolt display does buck the excitement somewhat, it can be better.
The main connectivity feature, the Thunderbolt port, is at effect simply Mini DisplayPort. Thunderbolt's more inviting feature is its bandwidth, but which doesn't offer any advantage here. It's also possible to daisy-chain multiple Thunderbolt devices using a single port, but in the lack of compatible devices currently out there, it's tough to imagine this advantage being popular. The only common application I can consider is daisy-chaining two displays with a single MacBook Pro, that's said to be possible (I have not tested it personally).
You'll also receive 3 USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, plus an Ethernet port. These ports can work as extensions from the connected Mac, that's handy occasionally. MacBook Airs, for instance, lack Ethernet available whilst an option, but can use an Ethernet connection via this display.
What's lacking is, obviously, HDMI and DVI. The lack of USB 3.0 ports is another downer, though many competitors have yet to offer USB 3.0 as well. The connections available on the Thunderbolt display is practical if you are connecting it to your Mac, but if you aren't, it'll seem rather limited.
The speakers on this display certainly are a 2.1 system which provides reasonably adequate sound. However, like all single built-in monitor audio system ever made, the insufficient proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 provides better audio quality, and you should want to purchase a real solution if you don't almost never hear music, watch movies online or play games. If you don't watch free movies online or play games though, it is likely you wouldn't be buying this monitor.
To enable FaceTime, a microphone and a webcam are included. The webcam quality is much better than most built-in monitor webcams and in many cases many inexpensive stand-alone webcams. Microphone quality is adequate for FaceTime and web calls, but isn't a sensible choice for recording a podcast.
Although the display's large stand is stable and classy, it only tilts slightly, as there are no height, swivel or pivot adjustment. For some users, this can be going to be a big deal, and almost all other monitors priced above $400 offer these functions. This is one instance where Apple's commitment to simple design seriously limits a product.
There's no question the Thunderbolt display, just like the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, comes with a top-notch viewing experience. Apple have not skimped on display technology, even though the glossy glass panel could possibly be annoying in bright rooms, it provides jaw-dropping visuals in ideal lighting.
It's unfortunate, then, that the display is average by every other measure. Limited connectivity and a lack of ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind engineered to be just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for sale, you may choose to grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for the similar dough.
Given the poor value, you will never rate this system as anything much better than average in spite of the excellent image quality. The main reason to get this display isn't because it's the best value but rather because you own a Mac already, and you desire to stay in Apple's ecosystem.
